So, a local insurance agency has a new advertising campaign out that they think is super-funny. It makes fun of Pacific Northwest “types.” Unfortunately, they also make fun of medical conditions–which is over-the-top. The campaign divides PNW personality types into trading cards.
Unfortunately, #78 is Gluten-Free Lady. Since I have celiac, which is the technical term for “gluten-free” I don’t take too kindly to being made fun of. Celiac is an autoimmune disease–like diabetes and MS. I don’t think many people would think it’s cool to poke fun at people with those conditions. I guess at one point they poked fun of people who are allergic to soy–but then took it off due to complaints. Why is it still OK to make fun of those of us who can’t eat gluten. It’s hard enough not to be able to eat so many things without being made fun of for it.

Ouch…geez, and they want to sell their product (insurance)? I don’t think so!!

Thank you for pointing this out. I called Pemco and complained.

I hadn’t seen that particular one. I am so sorry.

Yeah, that’s the same company that refused to insure me because I’d been without a car for three years, and thus, hadn’t been continuously insured. Irritating, but not a big deal, until the lady on the phone suggested that (at age 25, mind you) my best bet was to get on my mother’s insurance. That would be my mother who had been uninsured for six years, by virtue of being dead.
That still irks me.
