Menu for Hope, December 14-25, 2009

December 14, 2009 by Jeanne

It’s time for Menu for Hope. This is one of my favorite foodie events–it combines generosity and food and presents. What more could you ask for? And it brings food lovers together from all over the world.

Menu for Hope, the brainchild of Pim over at Chez Pim is a way for food lovers to donate to the UN World Food Programme’s Purchase for Progess (P4P) campaign. The P4P campaign:

“Enables smallholder and low-income farmers to supply food to WFP’s global operations and to gain more by doing so. P4P will give farmers the know-how and the tools to be competitive players in the agricultural marketplace. It will also put more cash directly into their pockets in return for their crops.”

Empowering people to grow food to feed others and themselves. This is a cause I can get behind.

How Menu for Hope Works

For the two week period between December 14th and December 25th, people can donate to Menu for Hope via FirstGiving (see the Menu for Hope badge to the right). For every $10 you donate, you get a raffle ticket to win a prize. The prizes are fabulous food-related items and experiences from food bloggers all over the world. And, you can donate for yourself and for others. Raffle tickets are great gifts and stocking stuffers.

How to Donate:

1. Click on the Menu for Hope badge in the upper right margin. This will take you to an online site, FirstGiving, where you can make your (tax deductible) donations with a credit card. FirstGiving collects and processes the payments and, at the end of the campaign, transfers the donations in one lump sum to the UN World Food Progamme. This is a win-win situation for all parties involved. The bloggers never touch the money.

2. Please specify which prize(s) you’d like in the “Personal Message” section in the donation form. Each $10 you donate will buy one raffle ticket toward any prize. You must write in how many tickets you would like to allot per prize, and you must use the prize code. For example: a donation of $50 would make you eligible for 5 prizes. This could be 2 tickets for EU01 and 3 tickets for UW22. So, you would write “2xEU01, 3xUW22” in the Personal Message section.

3. Check back with Chez Pim on January 18, 2010 for prize winner results.

The Prize Four Chickens is Donating: 2 Fabulous Food Books, Signed (code UW22)

This year, my donation to the raffle combines two of my passions: books and food. I am pleased to be donating signed copies of two of my current favorite food books.

The first is a signed copy of my pal Langdon Cook‘s Fat of the Land: Adventures of a 21st Century Forager:

The second is a signed copy of Thomas Keller’s newest cookbook, Ad Hoc at Home:

I love both of these books!

Fat of the Land is a wonderful book about Langdon’s adventures in foraging. It combines personal stories with the history of each foodstuff he is foraging for. I love his stories–intimate and funny. And, I loved getting to know more about the history of Washington State’s wild areas, even if those “wild” areas are in an urban setting. He takes us squid-jigging at the end of a downtown Seattle pier, morel hunting in the Okanogan National Forest, salmon fishing at a public beach, huckleberry picking in the Olympic Mountains, and more. At the end of each chapter is recipe that uses the foraged item from the story. This is my Christmas present this year–I got several for family and friends, including this signed copy for one lucky Menu for Hope reader!!

Ad Hoc at Home is my new favorite cookbook. And, it’s huge. It makes me so happy every time I see it my dining table, open to the page of a new recipe I’m trying. This is Keller’s version of a family meal cookbook. It contains recipes for everyday staples that are approachable and doable at home. It has recipes for things like Buttermilk Biscuits, Fried Chicken, Blueberry Cobbler, Pickles, Mushroom Soup, and so much more. Man, I get hungry every time I look through it. This is one special prize. Not only is it a fabulous cookbook by one of the top chefs in the country, it is not available anywhere else. It is sold out even at Amazon until February! I snagged a copy when Keller visited Seattle. So, this is your chance not only to get a copy, but to get a signed copy!

Please donate early and often! Menu for Hope needs you.

Thank you!
