So, life here at Four Chickens has been on fast forward ever since the new year dawned. I’m telling you–it’s been busy! Girlfriend’s 7th birthday was Friday, the 26th, and there were all sorts of things leading up to the big birhday party on Sunday. We invited 21 of her closest friends (heh) and hoped that the house wouldn’t be too destroyed. And you know what? It was great! The kids were good, the cake was fabulous (if I do say so myself) and there was fun all around.
The theme was circus, hence the “Pin the Ball on the Seal’s Nose” game above. DH drew the seal and Girlfriend colored it in. We also had the kids color their own clown hats (DH came up with the hat–it was ingenious). And then they just played and played and ate and ate. I bought a bunch of popcorn bags at the Popcorn Suppy Company. I also bought popcorn boxes to put the treat stuff in. I really recommend them–it was easy to order online, the order was shipped within minutes (I was shocked to see how fast it was shipped) and they arrived fast. And, the best thing–the shipping box smelled like popcorn! Yay! The day of the party I popped bunch of corn and served it in the bags. The kids loved it and the house smelled good.
I made a three ring circus cake–three separate cake layers with different circus decorations on each. One had circus animals on platforms, one had clowns, and one had a circus train. Each cake had little balloon decorations. I am bummed that we didn’t get a picture of the cakes. But they were yummy! I made them from our standard birthday cake recipe: the Chocolate Chip Poundcake from The Whimsical Bakehouse, but Hansen and Hansen (my absolute favorite cake cookbook). I made it gluten-free, of course.
Now that the party is done, we are slowing trying to get back to normal. I finished my River Rapids Socks:
Pattern: River Rapids Socks by Sockbug
Yarn: Koigu KPPPM in color P822
Needles: KnitPicks 32″ circulars, size 2.5. I really liked these needles for the magic loop–the cable was flexible, the join was smooth, the ends were pointy.
These socks were fun and easy to knit. They made good purse socks.
I need to go take a nap…

Happy Birthday to the girlfriend! Even your socks have a hint of popcorn in that photo (I love popcorn, I used to make my kids stand silent to hear the first kernal pop – only way to get a moments peace…)
