So, Girlfriend’s school’s PTA brought in a s*x educator, Amy Lang, from Birds, Bees and Kids, to help the parents with the whole birds and bees discussion with their kids. I have to say it was one of the best meetings I’ve ever attended. Not only was the information timely and helpful, but she is a great speaker and unbelievably funny. She gave us a lot of helpful advice like the fact that you should call the “parts” by their appropriate names because, for example, everyone knows what a vag*na is , but not everyone knows what a “tinklewaggle” is. Good point.
Anyway, one of her helpful pieces of advice is to buy one or two age-appropriate books on the subject and then leave them lying around for the kids to read. The kids will then read them and ask you clarifying questions. This helps with the dilemma of “where do I start?”
dAhub and I got two books recommended by Amy: The Care and Keeping of You: The Body Book for Girls and It’s So Amazing! A Book About Eggs, Sperm, Birth, Babies and Families. These are great books. Go get them (or just get the It’s So Amazing book if you have boys). Anyway, Girlfriend found them right away and has been reading them every chance she gets. We’ve been having some really interesting conversations as a result.
One perk is that Girlfriend has been giving me some helpful advice about personal hygiene. For example, one day she said, “You know mom, you shouldn’t shave with a dull razor because you can get nicks.” After a beat she asked, “what are nicks?”
