So August is here, although you wouldn’t know it from the weather. It’s in the low 60s, overcast and drizzly. To be fair, it’s been nice the past couple of weeks–and even got into the 80s for a couple of days there.
So far, this August has meant:
1) Our 9th wedding anniversary! Wow. Our daughter had a playdate at a friend’s house while we went out to dinner. It was great! We haven’t had dinner out in I don’t know how long.
2) More down time. We started the summer with so many camps and things that I felt a little out of it. Now we’re taking each day as it comes and doing things like hang out at the wading pool or at one of the local lakes.
3) I’m finishing up some ancient knitting works in progress. One is Martha from Rowan that I started last summer. It went into time out when I got bored with it. Another is Saranac from Knitty. Martha now just needs to be sewn up, a neckband and some buttons. Saranac needs a sleeve and the top half of the body. I’m also trying to work on Aibhlinn from Knitty. That went into the time out pile ages ago and I’m simultaneously bored with it and feeling quite guilty that it’s not done. I won’t even talk about the Fiber Trends Peace Shawl that has been languishing in my knitting basket for ages.
4) A lovely visit from my husband’s Great Aunt Norma. She’s from Maryland and is out in Seattle for the International Thimble Collector’s Conference (who knew?). I’ve never met her before, but she sends cards and gifts at Christmas and birthdays. She called last week and said she’d be in town and would we like to try to get together. Well, sure! I love meeting relatives. And we had the nicest time with her. Her brother was my husband’s paternal grandfather. She brought a couple pieces of jewelry for our daughter that he (her brother) gave her when she was younger, including a little heart locket that she got when she was about 6. So incredibly sweet. Our daughter was quite honored to be given such special and grown up gifts. And the fact that they are from her great grandfather is amazing. Aunt Norma also brought her old china children’s tea set for our daughter–who is now planning a “grown up” tea party to use it at. I can’t tell you how special all of these gifts are to us because of the history and Aunt Norma’s thoughtfulness. We had such a fun day with her and I really enjoyed getting to know her. She is one special person and I’m so glad that we got to spend the day with her.
5) Our first Liberty apples are just about ripe! I can’t wait to taste them. We got the tree a couple of years ago (along with a Honeycrisp that didn’t fruit this year). I hope we get at least one apple before the squirrels get them.
6) Starting to think about school. We had our first playdate with some other new students at the school we’ve switched our daughter to and she had a great time. Wow. I can’t believe that the summer is really on the downward slope towards fall.
