Yesterday, a friend called and said she had seen some flyers in the neighborhood saying “Found: Hungry Urban Chicken. Call for details.” Well, I called and described our chickens to the kind soul who rescued the urban chicken. She described a “red” chicken (ours are yellow), but I went over anyway just to make sure–and it turns out that it WAS our chicken! DeeDee survived the raccoon attack–she just flew over the fence and wandered the streets until the neighbor took pity on her. I was so happy to know that we didn’t lose two gals, just one (although we still mourn Mary Sue).
Anyway, I scooped her up and brought her home–as soon as she saw the yard she started scrambling to get out of my arms and onto home soil. Rosie and Millicent didn’t even look up–they just kept pecking at the grass as DeeDee joined them. I can’t tell you how great it is to look out and see a yellow feather butt in addition to the black and white feather butts.
Thanks to the universe for small miracles.

Whew! So glad you found your hen. We don’t have raccoons but we lost two to a mink about a month back. I just finished building them a predator free palace! Or at least I hope it is.
